So you just moved in, and there it is—a towering, gorgeous tree smack in the middle of your new yard. Beautiful? Absolutely. But now what?
Big trees need love, too, especially as we head into spring. Here’s a quick, homeowner-friendly guide to keeping your tree (and your yard) healthy this season:

Start with a Visual Check: Look for dead branches, cracked limbs, or anything that looks off. If anything seems questionable, call a pro before grabbing the ladder.
DIY Fertilization (Yes, You Can): Pick up a slow-release granular fertilizer from your local garden center. Look for something labeled for trees and shrubs. Sprinkle it around the drip line (that’s where the outer branches reach) and water it in well.
Mulch Like a Boss: Lay down a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree, but keep it a few inches away from the trunk. This helps retain moisture and keeps weeds from competing with your tree.
Water Smart, Not Hard: If we’re not getting much rain, give your tree a deep soak once every couple of weeks. Shallow watering won’t reach the roots that matter.
Plan a Spring Pruning: Trees benefit from a little spring cleaning, too. Remove small, dead twigs or crossed branches. For anything bigger, leave it to the pros—especially if you’re unsure.
Trees add beauty, shade, and even value to your home. A little attention this spring goes a long way in keeping them strong, safe, and stunning year-round.
